Becoming An Apprentice
Starting an apprenticeship gives you real work experience, industry-recognised training, and a clear pathway into your chosen career. Whether you’re leaving school, changing direction, or growing in your current role, an apprenticeship allows you to earn, learn, and build the skills employers value.
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is a paid job with structured training. You’ll gain practical experience while studying for a recognised qualification, all as a contracted employee with a wage and holiday allowance. Every apprenticeship lasts at least one year, with some taking longer depending on the level. Training is funded by your employer and the government, with support available for eligible learners.

What will I do as an apprentice?
You’ll train for a specific role, combining hands-on experience with structured study for at least 20% of your working hours. You’ll complete assessments throughout your programme and finish with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for long-term career progression.
What different types of apprenticeships are there?
Apprenticeships span a wide range of industries and job roles, far beyond traditional trades. You can apply whether you’re new to work or already qualified, even at a degree level. Some programmes require previous qualifications, while others offer additional support in English and maths. Explore the available course options to find the right fit for your goals.
| Apprenticeship Level | Equivalent To | |
| Intermediate apprenticeships | Level 2 | GCSE |
| Advanced apprenticeships | Level 3 | A-Levels |
| Higher apprenticeships | Level 4 & 5 | Foundation Degree and above |
| Degree apprenticeships | Level 6 & 7 | Bachelor's or master's degree |
How much will you be paid?
Apprentices must be paid at least the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices, though many employers choose to pay more. Your wage will depend on your role, sector, region, and apprenticeship level. Some learners may be eligible for additional financial support based on age and circumstances.
How are apprenticeships assessed?
You’ll be assessed throughout your programme, culminating in an independent End-Point Assessment. This includes at least two methods, such as workplace observation, written tests, or a portfolio. The EPA allows you to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills gained during your apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship vs university
Many school leavers consider both options. The university option offers thousands of courses and supports academic and personal development. Apprenticeships provide immediate entry into work, allowing you to earn, gain experience, and build job-ready skills without tuition fees. You can still apply for an apprenticeship after completing a degree.

Benefits of becoming an apprentice
You’ll gain real workplace experience from day one, earn a wage as you learn, and avoid tuition fees. Apprenticeships help you develop practical skills, build industry connections, and progress towards long-term career goals. Whether you’re a school leaver or an adult learner, an apprenticeship offers structured support and clear progression opportunities.
University benefits
The university option offers flexibility to study a broad range of subjects, develop independence, and build transferable skills useful across many careers. It remains a popular route for learners who prefer academic study or want more open career pathways. Is an apprenticeship for me?
Consider whether the role suits your career goals, what the hours involve, and the qualifications you’ll gain. Think about the expectations of the workplace and how the apprenticeship will help you progress. Understanding these factors can help you decide if this is the right route for you.
