Why I chose an Apprenticeship over going to University

My name is Evan Church and I’m just 6 weeks into my Apprenticeship. I wanted to write about why I chose an Apprenticeship over going to University. I am 18 years old and I can honestly say that ‘this is the best thing I’ve ever done.’ Read my blog on how I ended up as a Social Media Apprentice and why ‘it’s been the best 6 weeks of my life.’

I went through being stressed out over exams, to being stressed after exams. I was even stressed once I got my exam results as I just didn’t know what to do with them.

I didn’t know if I wanted to go to College or University, so I had a look around and went to events at different Colleges to see what they were offering. I found a Photography course that I thought was interesting, so I applied and I got a place. I did that for two years.

Then I was back to square one again. I’d got more qualifications yet I still didn’t know what to do with them. I could go to University and study Photography even further and get into a lot of debt – but why would I want that? So like I did before, I did some research and I found an Apprenticeship provider called ‘Estio Training.’

I used IT a lot when I was studying Photography so I had a look at the Estio Training website to find out more about what an apprenticeship is and what they offer. I thought ‘why not?’ I applied for a Social Media and Digital Marketing Apprenticeship, it sounded really interesting and I thought I had the skills to take on the job role.

The Apprenticeship was actually an internal role with Estio Training. I thought to myself this could be really good for me. I got an interview and I got offered the job. I have now been working here at Estio Training for 6 weeks.

It has honestly been the best 6 weeks of my life. Learning new skills, meeting amazing people and earning money whilst I learn.

You couldn’t ask for anything better at this age. This is why I considered an Apprenticeship. It was a risk because I didn’t know what it was going to be like. But I’m glad I took that risk, because it’s the best thing I have ever chosen. So for all the young people who have finished school/college please consider an Apprenticeship. It will be the best you do.

You might get an Apprenticeship in IT, health care or construction. But no matter which field you choose, an Apprenticeship will let you work with someone who’s an expert and who will help you learn how to be an expert too. You’ll learn to do work you love and you’ll have the chance to be your best. That will give you great job opportunities for the future.
