Apprenticeships work for Estio

The theme for this year’s National Apprenticeship Week is Apprenticeships Work. So, this year we are bringing to you just a handful of success stories, showcasing exactly how well ‘Apprenticeships Work’ for us, for our clients and for our apprentices.

As one of the UK’s leading IT and Digital training providers we are passionate about apprenticeships, and all of the opportunities that they bring. We encourage all our staff, in all departments, to undertake an apprenticeship in order to gain more skills, to improve the skill-sets we have within our business and to provide fulfilling careers to our employees.

Today, as it is also International Women’s Day, we thought we would celebrate one of our newest recruits, Lucy McCullagh. Lucy is the newest addition to our Marketing department, and is largely in charge of all content for our social media and monitoring analytics of those channels and our website.

We discussed with Lucy her apprenticeship journey so far, and why she feels Apprenticeships Work.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship, rather than other routes of education?

I went to college for a few months and was working along side in a part time job and realised I liked learning but preferred the work experience I was getting from my part time job. I decided to leave college in pursuit of a career, beginning with an apprenticeship.

How did you decide you wanted to work in Digital Marketing?

I’ve always been a creative person and found that a job in marketing can really allow me to embrace my creativity. As well as being creative, I also enjoyed the analytical work involved in Marketing. My part time job was in a family-owned retail store which had an online shopping site. As the business was so small we all helped each other out and I discovered my love for marketing by helping the ladies who worked on promoting the website and its products.

Because the theme of this week is Apprenticeships Work, why do you think Apprenticeships Work?

Apprenticeships work because they allow you to get the qualifications you would going to college and university but also help you gain valuable work experience, which I think is very important to help you reach your career goals.

What has been your favourite module?

My favourite module has been Principles of Coding. Before taking that module I’d never done anything remotely like coding before so it was new and a challenge! I’m happy to say that I passed this module, due to the massive amounts of help and support I got from my trainer.

What do you like about working at Estio?

I enjoy working at Estio because it’s a fun and lively place to work for a 19 year old! In addition to this they also provide me with a huge amount of support in my job role and in my apprenticeship.

Do you feel well supported in your apprenticeship by colleagues, trainers and skills development coaches?

As previously mentioned the support I get from trainers in and out of the learning environment is amazing! They are always there if I need clarification on something. My colleagues are just as amazing, my line manager is very supportive and allows me to spend time on my apprenticeship work and helps me along the way by explaining things. My Skills Development Coach has been great – I’d never heard of OneFile (an online portfolio system that Estio use for you to put all your evidence for your apprenticeship work) before starting my apprenticeship and it was quite difficult to use at first, but she spent time with me explaining how to use it and how to get the best out of it.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship to a friend?
Yes, I would recommend apprenticeships to a friend! An apprenticeship has worked so well for me, and I believe it could for anyone.

We are thrilled to have such a hard working, dedicated woman on our team helping us to promote apprenticeships to the nation!
